The 7 Wardrobe Staples for Autumn/Winter 17

The 7 Wardrobe Staples for Autumn/Winter 17

It’s transition time: as we move from the summer months into autumn – and yes, even winter – everyone needs those key pieces that will adapt for all sorts of weather. So you may be asking: what wardrobe staples are best to invest in, and how can you wear them both in the office and in your downtime? The Littlewoods style bloggers are here to help.

Let’s be honest: transition clothes have to do a lot. They’ve got to take you from the last days of summer, when the sun can still be quite warm, into the crisper, cooler temps of autumn (not to mention the rains and winds) and into the chill beyond. It’s a gradual, but definitive change — not just in the weather, but in colour palettes, textures, and layers.

Given their importance, wardrobe staples should be carefully considered, ask yourself “Will I wear this at least three times?’ and ‘Can I wear this at least three different ways?’ These staples should be timeless, versatile, and as high-quality as your budget will allow.

At Littlewoods HQ , we’ve rounded up seven key pieces (at different price points) that should always be in your wardrobe:

The Biker Jacket

1. The Biker Jacket

The classic biker jacket adds an edge to any outfit. Whether you wear it over a dress with heels, or jeans with an ankle boot, the leather biker jacket is suitable for any occasion and will be your go-to for the colder months.

Invest in great quality leather with the classic leather biker jacket from the Myleene range. If you’re feeling more daring, opt for a coloured biker, like this Vila Silver Biker Jacket in statement-making metallic silver. Or opt for a suedette biker jacket, like this khaki one from River Island for a subtle but stylish alternative.

2. The Denim Skirt

The denim skirt never goes out of fashion! But in a cool new update for AW17, try a maxi version. It’s great for work with a white shirt and smart shoes, or downtime with a grey t-shirt and your favourite trainers. Have a look at the River Island Denim Maxi Skirt and the Lost Ink popped side wrap denim pencil skirt.

3. Florals

Summer may be ending, but floral prints aren’t going anywhere. Choose cool-weather colours in pastels and leafy greens, opt for richer materials like velvets or lace, then layer them with leather skirts, tights and suede knee-high boots for office wear, or jeans for after hours.

Our faves include the Ted Baker high-neck floral blouse, River Island’s grey floral tie top, and the Lost Ink Bluebell floral print drawstring shirt.

4. Maxi Dresses

If you want to invest in just one key piece for the new season, make it the maxi dress. Loose, flowy dresses in gorgeous prints are popping up everywhere for the new season and will be brilliant for autumn weddings, big nights out, and even weekend shopping and latte trips with the girls.

Check out the Myleene Klass sleeveless ruffle high low maxi dress, Lost Ink’s frill curve maxi,  the fabulous Praise leopard-print maxi from Religion, and Comino Couture’s multi-print flamingo dress.

5. Tailoring

Suiting has left the office and is moving into the mainstream.

Invest in a classic fit like the ones from the Karen Millen tailoring collection that works for nearly every body shape. Karen Millen’s tailoring collection jacket is a classic look that will flatter everyone, as will the matching cropped trouser. By the way, cropped trousers are a great option for autumn – especially because you don’t need to find the exact-right heel height, like you would with a longer trouser. Incredibly versatile!

6. The White Shirt

The one thing that has never and will never go out of style – the white shirt.

Choose tailored shapes for work, like this Karen Millen tailored wrap shirt, or choose a twist on the classic with this Miss Selfridge poplin embroidered shirt, perfect for AW17.

White shirts are available in a range of materials, lengths and arm lengths, and are re-worked with added detailing like frills and bows – there are loads to choose from to suit every style. So can you wear this in three different ways? We should think so!

7. The Ultimate Bag

Thinking of investing in a new handbag for autumn? Then think classic, ageless style and great quality. You’ll want a bag that holds its shape when filled with all of your belongings, uplifting your look from casual to considered.  A top-handle bag is a great investment and the perfect accessory to any outfit. Check out our top picks: the Ted Baker Pearl & Jewel Lady Tote bag, Fossil’s Fiona tote, Radley’s Great Eastern Street large multiway tote bag, and the Superdry Etoile Trapeze tote bag.
