Our top 4 New Year Resolutions for your home

January is all about fresh starts and setting goals for the year ahead. In the spirit of “new year, new me”, have you thought about what you want from your home? Could you use a refresh or a de-cluttering, to give you that little boost that makes you feel happier in your surroundings?

In the spirit of new beginnings, the Littlewoods.com team have created a list of four ‘home resolutions’ for the New Year and compiled our top tips on how to achieve them – all without doing (or paying for!) any major renovations. Here’s how to make your space look and feel beautiful, clean, efficient and most of all, homely.

It’s true what they say: a clear and organised home creates a clear and organised mind. Creating a well-planned space that is free from loads of clutter creates an air of calmness and serenity, and will help you to love the space in which you spend a lot of your time.

So kick off 2018 by getting organised. To make it easier for yourself, start with three piles or bin bags: one for the bin, one for charity, and one for things that can be stored away. Set yourself the challenge to get rid of anything you don’t use, and keep it manageable by approaching it room by room so you don’t get overwhelmed. The more space you clear, the more room you have to display your most cherished items, things that mean a lot to you, raise your energy levels, and make you feel good. Get rid of anything that is broken, inefficient, or that brings you down in any way – ie, clutter. Clear the table tops and counters of everything that you do not use on a daily basis, get rid of the recycling and things you’ve meaning to take to the tip.

Now you’re left with the items that you would like to keep, consider useful and attractive ways to store them. Items like DVDs, books, and CDs can be displayed in bookcases for easy access, for example, and those kicked-off shoes can be left on shoe racks or in woven baskets.

Once we’re all organised and de-cluttered, it’s time to focus on keeping our homes clean and tidy. Housework can be drudgery, we know, and keeping on top of cleaning the house can be a daunting process. But not to worry – there are some great hacks for keeping the mess under control!

  • Get the family involved: If everyone chips in with the chores, you all have more time to spend together as a family after. Divide roles amongst yourselves or create a weekly cleaning rota and get through the jobs twice as fast!
  • Focus on one job at a time: How effective is your cleaning routine? Do you start in one place, then drift into the next room and start something else? Do you mop the floor first then stand on the clean floor whilst cleaning the rest of the kitchen? That’s a perfect recipe for getting overwhelmed and for doubling the amount of work you have to do. No thanks! Finish one thing before moving on to the next.
  • Create routine to keep on top of the mess: Don’t just throw the jumper you wore today on the back of a chair or the top of a dresser. Put things away as you go – every thing should have an assigned place! Dirty clothes should be put in the laundry bag every evening, clean clothes hung back up in the wardrobe, dishes loaded straight into the dishwasher, and clean laundry put away once it’s folded. By following these rules daily, the mess will be much easier to control and you’ll feel less overwhelmed!

Lighting, electricals, appliances: chances are there are a few things around the house that either aren’t working or could do with an update. The fridge freezer that has been broken for weeks is causing you un-necessary stress, and should be replaced. And get rid of that noisy 10-year old washing machine too, whilst you’re at it. These types of kitchen appliances can be a big investment, but are definitely worth it in the long run and will make your life so much easier. Right now Littlewoods.com is offering up to 30% off these big ticket items, so it’s the perfect time to replace the old with the new!
