Men’s fashion: Focus on Fred Perry

Men’s fashion: Focus on Fred Perry

The word ‘icon’ gets used a lot – and let’s face it, most don’t deserve the title. But there’s no doubt that Fred Perry was a true British icon – a charming athlete who won three consecutive Wimbledon Championships in the 1930s and was one of the sporting world’s first true celebrities. And now, more than 80 years on, the clothing line he began in the 1940s is one of the most recognisable and respected brands in the world, with modern superstars such as Andy Murray wearing Fred Perry tennis shirts on the court and cycling legend Bradley Wiggins designing his own collection for the brand.

Fred Perry Colour Block PoloOf course, it really all started with the launch of The Shirt in 1952: the tennis polo shirt with the striped collar and laurel-wreath patch, which was inspired by the original Wimbledon logo. These days, you’re just as likely to see DJs, pop stars, and fashion leaders wearing the fabled shirt as you are to see it on centre court – after all, it was adopted by the “Mods” in the 60s as part of their distinctive look. To this day it remains a truly timeless classic: sporty, cool, and quintessentially British.

At Littlewoods, we’re thrilled to be offering a fantastic range of Fred Perry sportswear, trainers, accessories and so much more. Let’s start with a contemporary twist on the legendary shirt: a colour-block polo in rich mahogany with blue accents at the sleeves and a tipped collar. With the perfect hue for autumn, this shirt can do double-duty, either under a blazer or paired with denim. We love the long-sleeved option too: this one’s in bramble, a deep berry colour, with white piping at the collar. If you fancy a dressier option, Fred Perry also does a gorgeous long-sleeved brush-cotton oxford shirt, like this one in black, or maybe the black-and-white gingham check is more to your taste?

Fred Perry Track Jacket KidsWhile the brand may have started out with shirts, these days the range has expanded to become a leader in sporty style. The Fred Perry track jacket is a #1 best seller for us: the same attention to detail and craftsmanship that defines the brand, mashed up with the athleisure vibe that defines street-cool style: it’s simply a must-have. And did you know Fred Perry did a range of boys’ clothing as well? If you have a little one who’s a mini-me of his dad, you must have a look at the Fred Perry track jacket in boys’ sizes as well: it’s too cute. There’s also a range of tees, polos, and colour block jackets to choose from!

But back to the men’s edit… We’ve got a selection of trainers with that trademark retro flair that hearkens back to Cool Brittania: check out the Underspin Canvas Plimsoll in navy with the laurel logo in red or the perpetually popular Kingston trainers in white leather with navy piping – classic! Not forgetting the vintage appeal of the highly covetable Classic Barrel Bag: striped canvas handles and silver-tone hardware gracing a simply gorgeous ivy green holdall.
