If there’s one item in our wardrobes that never, ever seems to go out of fashion, it has to be the trench coat. It’s a failsafe style for all seasons, and despite a multitude of variations over the years, the classic cream belted trench is a consistent winner in our eyes.
Without question the brand most associated to the trench coat is Burberry, who have done a fabulous job of regularly reinventing the style just enough to keep it current, using celebrity ambassadors including the beautiful Emma Watson (below), and more recently the supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, to give it a new lease of life and appeal to a younger, more fashion savvy audience.
Even everyone’s favourite Duchess, Kate Middleton, showed she’s a fan of the trench when she wore a Burberry number (of course) to a public engagement in 2011 (below). And what’s good for Kate is good for us, and we can never resist a classic style that we know will become our go-to item for years to come.
In our eyes, a ‘classic’ trench coat should be a cream shade, belted and end somewhere around the mid-thigh. Other than that, individual details are welcomed as we all like a bit of uniqueness in our wardrobe don’t we! The South skirted mac (1) is about as classic as it gets. Simple, chic and with a feminine flared skirt, you can’t really go wrong with this one. Kate’s Burberry coat had a cute little ruffle around the hem, and in the same way we loved that little detail, we love the ruffle effect on Coleen’s trench coat from her Spring 2012 collection (2). With one button and a simple belt, the ruffles really do all the talking on this number. Our size 16+ So Fabulous! range have done a fab job with this contrasting piped trench (3) and the Love Label belted mac (4) follows the same lead with a subtle contrasting edge and a smart removable belt. The Lipsy ruched shoulder mac (5) only just made it on to our list as it’s more a shade of pink rather than cream, but we all love Lipsy and it’s ticked the rest of the boxes plus a cute bit of shoulder ruching, so we can’t really complain!
So if you’re looking to invest in a new coat that will see you through all season for years to come, the trench coat is the one for you. Now it’s just a case of finding the perfect one for you…
