Whether you’re expecting a new arrival for Christmas, or you already have one at home, you’ll probably find that there’s a lot of planning and thinking ahead to do to make sure it all runs smoothly over the festive season. We are talking about dogs, of course, and as a fully fledged member of the family, or as a new, very special, arrival on Christmas Day we know how important it is to make sure your pet pooch feels right at home and is well looked after.

Our ever expanding pet store has everything you need to do the job, from toys and food to grooming products and clothing. Apart from the Christmas treats, the dog jackets are particular favourites at this time of year, and they give your pup an extra layer to keep that chill off their back.  This Waggles Flying Jacket is our top pick thanks to the very cosy-looking fleece lining and distressed leather look.

As well as all of the bits and pieces to make your dog feel at home, it’s also worth thinking about pet insurance. You could get a free £50 starter pack (for a kitten or puppy) or up to 30% online discount when you take out Pet Insurance. Visit our Pet Insurance page for more information (you can find the offer terms and conditions there too) and get your beloved pet covered for any mishaps!

Competition Time!

Not only do we have that nice little Pet Insurance offer on the go, but we’re also giving you dog owners the chance to win a little Christmas treat for your pet pooch!  We’ll be giving one lucky winner (and their dog) all of the following items, two of which aren’t even available at so are real exclusives!…

  • A luxury leather rhinestone collar – it will be a large size in pink in colour! If you love your dog to be a bit bling, you’ll love this part of the prize!
  • A Dog Ruff Bed in black, made from a high quality tough tightly woven nylon. The cover is also waterproof and very easy to clean which makes it ideal for outdoor use, and as with any good bed, comfort is key!  The Dog Ruff bed is filled with space age memory foam crumb that contours to your dog’s body shape no matter how they lie.
  • Four piece set of Pet Head shampoo, which will have your pooch smelling like roses in no time! The prize includes four gorgeous fragrances – Passion Fruit, Fruit Fantasy, Green Apple and Kiwi and Oatmeal and Honey.

All you have to do to be in with a chance of winning this pooch-perfect prize is comment on the post telling us a bit about your dog and why you’d love to win this prize.

Here’s a little more competition info, so have a read then get commenting – good luck!

I would love to win this prize for my dogs -they are such great company and are always happy to see me when I get home. My little girl has been ill this week and they have both sat faithfully at the end of her bed. She felt much better today and they were rewarded with a long walk …such faithful friends xx

I got my dog, Hollie, last year from a rescue centre. She is the perfect dog for me. I would do anything for her! She deserves a little something for Christmas and I hope she wins 🙂

Muttley is a Staffy but both the name and the breed give completely the wrong impression. For a start, Muttley is female. Secondly, she is the softest, silliest dog in the world. She thinks she is a lap dog and tries desparately to sit on anyone’s lap the minute they sit down.
I’d love to see Muttley in a Pink Rhinestone Collar because for once people might not see her and jump to the wrong conclusion!

My dear Ruby a black and white springer spaniel would live to win this. She has had a rough time lately, having split her back leg open top to bottom whilst out on a forest walk. 3 operations later and many infections she is slowly recovering. She has smiled through it and is such a wonderful dog, it also cost us over £2000 and so we are skint and cant afford to buy her a new bed, so this could be a great treat for her XXX

I have a sprocker (springer/cocker cross) Alfie who is just a little bit too clever for his own good. We have all spelled out W*A*L*K*I*E*S but the little blighter learnt how to spell so I resorted to saying things in French. Guess who has a bilingual dog now!

I would love a new collar for my 8 month old border collie…she has grown out of her old one 🙂

Our dog Belle is the best friend anyone could ask for and a treasured member of our family. She is a four year old Cairn Terrier and is a great companion to my mother during the day, then sits on my lap in the evening. She is a small dog with the heart of a lion. She loves eating the end of the carrots when I peel them and chases peas across the floor like a mad thing! She loves her toys, so much so that the living room looks like a badly run creche at times.

I’d like to win this prize for our Rough Collie Ben as he’s an amazing dog and had a lot of problems but still wags his tail through them all. He’s very loyal and loving and he’s so great with the other pets. The cat follows him and they walk side by side together and sleep beside each other. One christmas he stole my sister’s shaun the sheep that we were wrapping up and run off with it and he’s never done that with anything else that wasn’t his but he took a real shine to it lol.

We adopted a retired racing greyhound 2 years ago, and he is the most lovable dog ever, people think greyhounds need loads of excersize but that is untrue about retired greys, our dog Mouse, only needs 2 20 minutes walk a day, then he is the laziest dog you have ever met, preferring to laze around on the settee all day long, always loving to snuggle up to who ever is sitting ther, he is so gently with our smaller children aged 5 and 7,, he really loves when they read him stories and lie there listening intently, He really is a wonderful addition to our family x

I think my dog deserves a treat as she is just getting over an operation on her leg. After running backwards and forwards to the vets for 6 weeks I think we both deserve some luck. Merry Christmas my gorgeous pooch, Molly xxx

  13. Posted by Andrew Doidge on December 15, 2011

Our dog is a black Labradoodle called Ralph. He is so loveable in every way. He was born on Christmas day last year, so this would make a lovely birthday and Christmas present for him.

Puff my 1 year old husky
    Stops me getting rusty
    Keeps me fit
    Keeps me happy
Handsome pooch and not at all yappy
    Deserves this prize
    Because he is wise
Protects the family and the home
Without my dog I’d feel alone.

I would LOVE to win this for my old girl Poppy, she is a black Labrador that we took in to out home 8 years ago after her owners threatened to have her put to sleep due to her disruptive behaviour, since being with us she has hardly put a paw wrong, is absolutely fantastic with my disabled daughter and is a true friend to all of us , her down side is she is a bit smelly at the moment so she could really do with a spruce up and some bling !

We have two lovely Cairn terriers, mother and son. Mum, Maud, is 14 and a half years old and her son Ben is 13 years old. Maud is completely blind and although she couldn’t see it, would look great in a nice new collar with a bit of bling. Ben has osteoarthritis and he LOVES his bed. A memory foam mattress would be just what he would ask Santa for if he could!

I’d love to win this lovely stuff for our dog Monty. Monty is a 9 year old Labrador who came to live with us after a work mate of my husband was looking for a new home for him. He has been a working gun dog all his life but was of no use to him anymore because he was going deaf in one ear. Before he came to us he’d always lived in a kennel outside & when the bloke came to drop him off he didn’t even look like a Labrador because he was so skinny – but I immediately fell in love. He’s now been with us 18 months and is the best dog we could ever had asked for, he’s so grateful for just having a comfy life and he loves being around people. Our 4 kids absolutely adore him, and I think being deaf actually makes life a little bit better for him with those noisy devils around 🙂

  29. Posted by jacki constantine on December 15, 2011

Fudge may be gettiing on but she is still a puppy at heart. Recently diagnosed with arthritis and cushings disease a new soft bed would be the best christmas present she could bark for.

I’m not allowed to keep a dog in my flat, so the special puppies in my life belong to my mum! She has two sausage dogs called Skye and Lewis and I love them so much. They cheer everyone up, especially me when I get glum about not being allowed a pet of my own!

I taught it to my dog!!She is VERY susvibsime, so it was easy to get her to roll over on her back.I’d say: Band bang! and point my finger downwards, and she’d lie down, and automatically roll over onto her back. Then I praise and treat like CRAZY when she does it. Now I can get her to do it without saying a word. Try louring your dog to a down with a treat, and rolling him on his back (NOT with force) and when he does, say Bang bang! and treat, Bang bang! and treat and so on and so on..
