A big trend this AW 2011 are jewel tones and what fashionistas are calling ‘boozy’ colours – think burgundy, plum, maroon and amethyst, emerald and sapphire. Although most of us would happily wear these gorgeous shades in a coat or accessories, AW 2011 also saw these colours being used for trousers, skirts, and other key bottom-half garments. For those of us who are used to jeans, chinos, and the everyday black work trousers, bright bottoms are a bit of a shock, and automatically make us think ‘How am I going to wear that?’. But with a little bravery and some guidelines, this trend is very wearable and looks stunning during the grey autumn days.
Your first reaction might be to pair bright bottoms with black to tone it down, but this can make the colour duller and look a bit traditional. Instead, be brave! Wear contrasting colours together for high-impact clothing, and steady the look with a selection of neutral accessories in beige, cream, white, gold or silver. We’ve teamed our South Wide Leg Trousers in blazing red with this Love Label Scallop Detail Blouse in fuschia pink and beige. The clashing colours are subdued by the neutrals in the blouse, matched with the Miss KG Arrinanna Bow Trim Court Shoes in beige velvet (another big trend for AW 2011). Finish the look with classic white and gold bangles for a strong, fiery outfit that makes the most of those jewel-like tones!
If the clashing colours are a bit too much, try a combination of richer tones instead. These less vivid colours look fantastic with black, but keep it interesting by using different textures and fabrics. The Oasis Wide Leg Flannel Trousers in cobalt blue really pop when we paired it with the Holly Willoughby Spot Print Chiffon Blouse in a burgundy and black spot: the contrasting textures of flannel and chiffon take this from a simple to a stunning look.
Keep it polished with high shine accessories, like the Clarks Milli Mine Tassel Tote Bag in glossy black with gold detailing. Finish with a pair of statement earrings – also big for this season: we love the French Connection Swing Drop Earrings with their abstract shape and pretty crystals. The result is a tailored but interesting look that ticks a lot of trend boxes – without going over the top.
Long and midi-length skirts continue to be popular this season, and are a great way to try out the bright bottoms trend. We love the South Maxi Skirt in bold royal purple; a beautiful colour for autumn and sure to make a statement! Let the garment do the talking by pairing with simple, classic shapes in the rest of the outfit that also nod to another big trend this season – androgyny. A crisp white blouse never fails to look good, and the Beaded Collar Blouse adds extra interest with the detailed glossy beading on the black collar. Tuck into the skirt for a clean look, and add the South Raoul Patent Shoes in black for kooky charm. The final touch is the Diamante and Pearl Floral Necklace. Heavy chokers and necklaces are back in a big way, so this statement piece is the perfect accompaniment to the rest of this fashionable, flattering outfit.
