This season, menswear is all about rugged, outdoor clothing and soft, comfortable layers to wear underneath: think adventures on the ski slope and a hot coffee in the chalet afterwards! These looks are spot on for winter as they combine practicality with style, allowing you to be a true adventurer without ever looking dull.
Our Alpine look centres round that snowy-weather staple, the patterned knit jumper or cardigan. A chunky, bold print and colour will keep you warm as well as on-trend: the Schott Mens Handmade Jacquard Cardigan combines a neutral knit with abstract and animal-inspired patterns, and features a fab, huge collar for keeping out the cold. For a more classical patterned jumper, the Farah Mens Fairisle Shawl Collar Cardigan fits the bill. Its traditional Fair Isle knit and short shawl collar makes this a great casual jumper teamed with classic blue denim. A more unusual colour combination that is also supersoft is the Goodsouls Mens Knitted Jumper. The grass green jumper flatters lots of different skin tones, and the knit pattern and ribbed collar hint at a retro vibe that perfectly encompasses the Alpine look this season!
For layering up in AW 2011, the Military Movement trend is a great place to start; the focus is on traditional garments with added details. We really like this Penguin Striped Mens Polo Shirt that comes in a simple grey – but with the added touches of two tone collar, contrast cuffs and placket, and subtle embroidered logo. For a slightly different look, try the Henri Lloyd Bill Mens Polo Shirt in a rich burgundy. With navy cuffs and collar, this polo shirt is ideal for layering under a light jumper and thick jacket. Shirts in this look should be workmanlike, but again with interesting details. A go everywhere, do anything shirt, the Beck & Hersey Longsleeve Mens Shirt in lightweight flannel is great for outdoor trips, but also suitable for work. Its cool grey colour goes well with chinos and denim, or even charcoal grey formal trousers. A more casual, fashion-forward alternative is the Firetrap Mens Check Shirt, which features faux suede elbow patches – and a cool twist, an asymmetric faux suede shoulder patch.
Artic Explorer, our third menswear trend this AW, is perfect for outerwear. Characterised by hardwearing and weather-resistant fabrics, the Arctic Explorer looks is all about protection against the elements. A useful addition to any wardrobe is the Henleys Mens Padded Gilet, which is great for wearing out on long autumn walks. With the added benefit of a cosy hood, this gilet keeps bulk down while still being warm. Another great item for those men who enjoy outdoor pursuits is the Timberland Packable Benton Mens Jacket. In breathable mesh inner and outer waterproof materials, this jacket can be easily folded away into its own pocket for ease of storage. If you prefer something more robust, the Superdry Patrol Mens Jacket is great for providing style and practicality in one sophisticated package. The large pockets both internally and externally provide plenty of space for essentials, while the heavyweight cotton is contrasted by the thick knitted collar and detachable fur hood. In a versatile charcoal colour, this coat is sure to suit any explorer – Arctic or not!
