The A-listers came out in force last night for the 2011 Oscars ceremony and, as always, the main question on everyone’s lips was…’what will they all be wearing?!’
This year’s ceremony didn’t disappoint on the fashion front, with some truly glamorous dresses and much needed creative designs, including ruffles, sparkle, lace and lots of intricate detailing. We might not be going to the Oscars, but if we needed style inspiration for our own special events, this is the place to get it!
While the designs and styles were wide and varied, there were a few key colours favoured by many of the big stars. Black was a prominent fixture as ever, they may be celebrities but even they know they can always rely on a fab black dress! We wrote an article a few weeks back declaring our love for the super-glam red dress, and this sentiment was clearly shared by many of last night’s A-listers, with the likes of Penelope Cruz looking her usual sexy self in a rich deep red, and Sandra Bullock looking stunning in a bright pillar box shade.
One of the favoured shades of the evening was ‘nude’, always a popular shade with the red carpet regulars. It’s hard not to look pretty and feminine in a nude dress, whether it’s verging more on the white or leaning towards a pale gold – Celine Dion and Gwyneth Paltrow both wore very simple floor length gowns and showed us how to pull off these two shades to perfection, both going for an almost metallic sheen giving the soft shades a bit of an edge. Follow their lead with this South metallic jersey maxi dress, and pair with minimal jewellery and subtle accessories for understated elegance.
Embellishment was key to many of the nude dresses seen at the Oscars, take note from Hilary Swank and Halle Berry in their shimmering nude gowns and go for a bit of sparkle – this Fearne Cotton embellished maxi is perfect if your style is more laid back than Oscar-worthy, but still right on track for a fabulous nude number.
While the colour of the night was nude, the fabric of the night was most definitely lace, with the likes of Scarlett Johansson looking fabulous in all over lace and The Black Swan’s Mila Kunis wearing a daring lace and ruffled number. This nude Love Label Petal Dress combines the colour with a lace-like cut out detailing, and the ruched fabric adds to the effect. It’s fun and pretty and is a perfect Spring take on the nude shade.
So if you’re planning your wardrobe for a big night out or special event, keep it chic and understated (with a bit of sparkle for that touch of glam!) in a nude dress. Just find your perfect shade and style and you’ll be ready for your red carpet moment!
