The evenings are getting lighter, it’s getting (marginally) warmer and we’re starting to feel the need to have a spring clean of our wardrobes and replace our clothes with pretty dresses, floaty blouses and maxi skirts. One way of bringing a bit of sunshine to your look is to don one of the season’s hottest styles – florals.
Florals come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, not to mention colours, so generally there is something for everyone; whether you want tiny, faded petal prints or loud in-your-face hippy flower power. This season though is all about the small, subtle floral prints that work amazingly with sheer fabrics and the colour palette is neutral enough to wear with almost anything.
Maxi skirts are the look Spring/Summer 2011 – perfect for keeping the sun off your legs, not to mention forwhen you’ve forgotten to shave them, but that’s by-the-by because they are effortlessly feminine and pretty, without having to make an effort at all. Sheer fabrics are all the rage this S/S as well so you why not combine the two trends with this sheer floral maxi skirt from Love Label.
Florals work really well as a daytime look, especially on sunny days, so take full advantage of the range of day dresses that are going to be flooding the stores. Pretty pastel colours brighten up any daytime look so for a casual style try this shirt style dress from South, in a pretty pink floral pattern, or try out this season’s hottest catwalk colour, blue, with this tea dress from Holly Willoughby. Team with flat sandals or ankle boots for a cute but chic daytime style.
There are several other pieces you can work into your wardrobe though; it’s not all about the dresses. Fearne Cotton is getting behind the floral look with these cute culottes – perfect for teaming with wedges and a sheer top. Or why not opt for a flirty playsuit as an alternative to the traditional dress?
Some people are not too convinced by florals however, and feel that it’s too ‘girly’ or they don’t really likean all over pattern. If you fall into this category you can still work florals in the form of accessories, adding a flash or floral, without it being overpowering.
There’s a whole wave of floral footwear stomping their way into shops everywhere. Wedges are a brilliant option for summer, and they’re much more comfortable that heels as well! Try out these Hilfiger Denim Capri wedges for a pretty day to night shoe, that won’t leave you with blisters.
Mix and match your jewellery in a kind of hippy-esque mismatch to add some dimension to your look and brighten up a plain outfit. A mix of metallics, metals and florals with this collection of bangles which also works well with the gypsy trend that is floating around at the moment.
